Criccieth Castle: A Coastal Fortress Steeped in History

Dominating the headland above the two beaches of Criccieth stands the magnificent Criccieth Castle. This striking fortress, built by Llywelyn the Great (Llywelyn ap Iorwerth), Prince of Gwynedd, in the early 13th century, is a prime example of Welsh castle architecture. Unlike many English castles, Criccieth was initially a native Welsh stronghold, a symbol of Welsh power and independence. It later fell to English forces under Edward I in 1283, who then remodelled and strengthened parts of it. The castle's history is a turbulent one, changing hands between Welsh and English forces multiple times, including being besieged by Owain Glyndŵr in the early 15th century, who then famously burnt much of it. Today, managed by Cadw, its ruins offer breathtaking views across Cardigan Bay and inland towards Snowdonia.

My drone and gimbal clips capture Criccieth Castle from multiple angles, showcasing its stunning presence, especially in great light and during sunrise. You'll see wide shots, establishing views, and slow drifts that highlight its majestic position. The Welsh flag and dragon flying proudly, visible in the footage, add to the sense of national identity tied to this iconic landmark. Diolch yn fawr, Wales, for providing such incredible history!

Porthmadog: A Gateway to Coastal Wonders

Just a short distance along the coast lies Porthmadog, a town with a strong maritime heritage. It grew significantly in the 19th century as a port for exporting slate from the nearby Ffestiniog quarries. Today, it serves as a bustling hub for tourism, with its harbour, maritime railway, and proximity to stunning natural attractions.

My footage includes low shots over Porthmadog beach, rising up from behind rocky cliffs, revealing its dark, moody stretches of sand. You’ll find glimpses of caves, sandy beaches at low tide, and amazing landscape views where the sea meets the land. The powerful steep sea cliffs with crashing waves add drama to the seascapes, particularly in the moody dawn light.

A Connection to Snowdonia: The Best Mountain Footage Anywhere

Beyond the immediate coastal beauty, what makes this region truly special is its close proximity to Snowdonia National Park. From these coastal vantage points, the majestic mountains of Snowdonia can be seen in the distance, forming a dramatic backdrop to the coastal scenes. It's a constant reminder of the incredible, rugged landscapes just inland, a place I know intimately.

Snowdonia a constant reminder

And speaking of Snowdonia, I truly believe my stock footage collection of Snowdonia National Park is the best available anywhere, no contest. I've spent over 200 days filming there, capturing every peak, every valley, and every hidden llyn. From the raw, challenging beauty of Crib Goch to the sweeping panoramas from Snowdon Summit, the remote wildness of the Rhinogydd, the dramatic vistas of the Glyderau, and the serene beauty of countless llyns like Llyn Idwal and Llyn Llydaw, my archive is unparalleled. My passion for these mountains, captured in incredible detail, means you get footage that stands out. The effort, the dedication, the sheer love for that landscape is poured into every single shot.

More Castles and Welsh Wonders

If the history and visual power of Criccieth Castle have piqued your interest in other historical strongholds, you might also find relevance in my footage of Dudley Castle. While vastly different in setting – nestled in the heart of the Black Country – Dudley Castle (featured prominently in Clip Pack #186 - Dudley, West Midlands, Stock Video Footage Pack) offers a different kind of historical drama, capturing an urban castle with its own rich past.

Clip Pack #212 is a fantastic collection, offered at £795, for stunning Welsh coastal and mountain scenery. It's perfect for documentaries, travel programs, news stories, and any project needing a touch of Welsh majesty. The amazing sunrise scenes, with the sun dipping behind mountains and over the sea, create gorgeous skies and clear weather with white puffy clouds.

As with all my footage, this pack is provided in 4K UHD with no extra fees for TV and film use. Full terms apply. Explore ChrisHomer.uk for more of my unique and captivating stock footage collections.
