Gear Reviews

Field Tested.

I don’t test gear in a white-walled studio. I test it in the mud, the rain, and the freezing winds of Snowdonia. If a piece of kit makes it onto this page, it has earned its place in my pack. These are honest, long-term reviews of the tools I use to survive and film in the wild.

The Glass

The cinema primes and telephotos that define the look of my work.

My Favourite Lenses

01. Samyang 85mm T1.5 Cine

"My go-to lens for cinematic B-roll. It’s cheap, manual focus, and produces a distinct 'vintage' character that modern Sony lenses can't match."

02. Sony 200-600mm G OSS

"The wildlife king. I use this for everything from moon shots at 1200mm to compressing street scenes in Birmingham."

03. Samyang 135mm f1.8

"The 'Bokeh Beast.' If I need to isolate a subject completely from the background, this is the sharpest tool in the bag."

04. Samyang 12mm f2.8 Fisheye

"My primary lens for astrophotography and tight tent interiors."

Camera Gear

The bodies, support, and motion tools that capture the shot.

My Favourite Gear

01. Benro Tortoise 35C Tripod

"My landscape workhorse. It features a unique 'Tortoise Mode' where the legs splay completely flat—perfect for low-angle shots without a center column getting in the way."

02. GVM GT-60D Motorised Slider

"A budget tool that punches above its weight. I use this to add subtle parallax movement to woodland scenes and timelapse sequences."

03. Sony A7iii Camera

"The reliable workhorse. Despite being an older model, its 24MP sensor and dynamic range make it my primary choice for timelapse and still photography."

04. Sony ZV-E1 Camera

"A low-light monster. I use this exclusively for video—its high ISO performance allows me to shoot clean footage in the darkest forests."

Camping & Survival

The shelters and essential kit that keep me alive on the hill.

My Favourite Kit

01. Hilleberg Soulo

"The fortress. When the forecast is brutal and the wind is howling, this is the only tent I trust to get me through the night."

02. MSR Elixir 1

"My lightweight solo go-to. It packs down small and is perfect for cloud inversions and milder nights on the mountain."

03. MSR Elixir 3

"The spacious option. Surprising capable in the winter snow, I use this when I need extra room for gear or company."

04. OutIn Nano Coffee Maker

"It keeps me awake! This little gadget comes on almost every camping trip now for that essential morning espresso."
