Unexpected History: Capturing Pro-Palestine Rally Timelapse Stock Footage in Cambridge
Sometimes, as a specialist cameraman, you set out with a meticulously planned shoot, only for reality to deliver something entirely different – and arguably, even more compelling. This was precisely the case this week, when I accidentally found myself amidst a significant Pro-Palestine rally in Cambridge, armed with high-end timelapse gear, initially intent on capturing the serene beauty of the city's ancient architecture.
My primary objective that day was to create sublime timelapse sequences of Cambridge's iconic old buildings: the majestic King's College, the historic King's Parade, and the grandeur of Great St Mary's Church and the Senate House. But as the day unfolded, a different kind of history began to write itself around me. News had just broken of a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict in Gaza, coupled with the release of hostages – a momentous, yet very complex, development.
When a Protest Finds You: A Filmmaker's Accidental Witness
Suddenly, the tranquil streets of Cambridge transformed. A large-scale Pro-Palestine rally began to converge, making its passionate way through the city centre. This wasn't a planned shoot for protest coverage; the protest quite literally "came to me," unfolding directly in front of my precisely positioned cameras.
The atmosphere was intense. Hundreds of people, predominantly students, gathered, many dressed in Palestinian keffiyehs. A distinct and almost eerie undertone was created by the numerous Covid facemasks worn by participants – a stark reminder of the unique social landscape of the mid-2020s. Palestinian flags waved, and chants filled the air, with signs proclaiming messages like "Free Palestine" and "from the river to the sea." One particularly prominent sign declared, "UK weapons are being used in the gaza genocide, stop arming israel," directly reflecting the heated political discourse of the time.
The Turn: From Political Passion to Fiery Chaos
Amidst the throng, I had a brief, unexpected encounter with Charlie Veitch, a well-known YouTuber who had been covering the protests from a different angle for months. Charlie tends to be on “the other side” of the anti-Israel protests, but he documents them very well; I’ve watched quite a few. And although I think he now films with mostly a mobile phone, he does have a cinematic flair, and a very entertaining way of describing things, and similar world views to mine, so we were friendly, but I quickly continued my work. The simple act of being seen talking to him, though, the "bloke with the big camera and tripod" earned me immediate and lasting hostility from the protestors. The repeated a few times, question was, "Which side are you on?"
As the event wore on, the atmosphere soured. Charlie was long gone, and I was left with the frosty, difficult ending of the protest. The final remnants of the crowd, fueled by what I can only describe as a very pungent mix of drugs and alcohol, started to get fiery and chaotic. I eventually packed down quickly, making it back to safe ground a few miles away on an e-scooter, where I met up with Charlie again, safe from the growing chaos. The entire episode added a raw, dangerous element to the footage that speaks directly to the volatility of social division.
