We had bright sunny days, incredibly light winds, and exceptional visibility. It made for some of the cleanest, most stable aerials I’ve shot in a long time.
Portsmouth is an awesome, massively underrated location IMO. They like to call it the great waterside city, or the great seafaring city, and when you are flying a camera over it, you immediately see why. It’s an amazing island packed with movement. There is so much action on the water at any given time, from the massive ferries to the small yachts cutting across the Solent.
Often, my camera work takes me out into the complete middle of nowhere. I spend a lot of my time producing quiet, independent wild camping films where I purposely don't see another person for miles. So, walking into a major city during a summer heatwave was a sharp contrast. The beaches were absolutely rammed with people. Honestly, I quite liked the busyness of it all, to be fair. It brought a massive amount of energy to the shots.
The Spinnaker Tower vs. The Eiffel Tower
When you shoot Portsmouth drone stock footage, the Spinnaker Tower is a constant sign of exactly where you are. It dominates the skyline. Because of that, I found myself purposely framing it out of a lot of my shots. If you aren’t careful, it ends up in the background of every single clip, and it naturally draws the eye, pulling attention away from the actual subject of the shot.
Dealing with a dominant landmark like that reminded me of drone filming in Paris. I filmed in Paris a lot during 2015 and 2016, and I spent a lot of time flying drones around the Eiffel Tower. I think I was one of the very first people to actually do it. The security situation was crazy. I remember turning up in the car at 4 AM as the camera operator, alongside my drone pilot, a producer, a couple of location scouts, and the logistics people, all ready to shoot. Then our support coach turned up. The French security made us have thirty—yes, thirty—cordon personnel to secure the area. They formed a massive human circle completely around us just so we could get to flying around the Eiffel Tower. Good times, but a massive logistical headache.
Down here at the Spinnaker, there was none of that. Nothing of the sort is needed, really. You just need a solid, professional knowledge of the many flying restrictions in the area and you can get to work.
The Royal Navy and Airspace Security
Speaking of restrictions, I was genuinely surprised by how little restricted airspace there was around the two new Royal Navy aircraft carriers docked in the city. I managed to get pretty close to them—completely legally, of course—and it made for some absolutely great shots.
However, looking at it through a different lens, my advice to the Navy would be to change things. As a veteran with actual ISTAR experience, looking at the security setup from an intelligence and surveillance perspective, they either need to move those ships elsewhere or get a much bigger temporary restricted zone established. It is ridiculous how close anyone can legally stick a drone up around those vessels. From a production standpoint, it gave me excellent access for the archive, but from a security standpoint, it’s wide open.
