Having spent, by my estimation, probably 20 weeks here over the years, filming everything from the thundering hooves of the Dante and York Ebor meets to its quiet medieval snickelways, I feel a deep connection to its very fabric. But beyond the ancient stones and soaring Minster, it is the people, the endless flow of lives lived out against such a historic backdrop, that truly fascinates my lens. Imagine York on a hot summer's day in 2025. The cobbled streets, worn smooth by centuries of footsteps, radiate the warmth. The city breathes with a vibrant, bustling energy. Tourists from across the globe mingle with local commuters, the air alive with a myriad of accents and the low hum of conversation. The magnificent York Minster stands as a constant, stoic presence, its intricate details absorbing the sunlight, its grandeur a quiet counterpoint to the lively scenes below. Every alleyway offers a new perspective, every open square a gathering place. This is the atmosphere I set out to capture – the raw, authentic pulse of a living, breathing city.
My approach to capturing these moments involved walking, riding my bike, and driving through the city, my trusty camera gear always at the ready. I used prime lenses for their unparalleled crispness and cinematic quality, and my Sony Cinema-grade camera, often recording in 4K HFR (high frame rate), allowed me to capture every nuanced detail. This means that the footage can be played back in beautifully smooth 4x slow motion, revealing subtle expressions and movements, or used at normal speed for a more immediate feel. The sheer technical precision required to capture these fleeting human moments, often amidst crowds, is immense, but the results are, in my opinion, nothing short of superb cinematic street photography.
