The Clent Hills: A Rich Tapestry of History and Nature

Located just a short distance from Birmingham, the Clent Hills are a distinctive range rising from the surrounding countryside. They are managed by the National Trust, ensuring their preservation for future generations to enjoy. The geology of the hills themselves is ancient, believed to be around 700 million years old, making them one of the oldest features in the local area. The highest point, Walton Hill, stands at 316 metres above sea level. The area's unique geology and ecology have earned it a designation as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

The history of the Clent Hills is as rich as its landscape. The area has been inhabited for over 3,000 years, with evidence dating back to the Bronze Age, including several ancient burial mounds. During the tumultuous English Civil War, Clent Hill was strategically important, serving as the site of a Royalist beacon used to signal the approach of Parliamentarian troops. Later, in the 19th century, as industrial towns like Birmingham grew, the Clent Hills became a hugely popular destination for day-trippers and tourists seeking fresh air and scenic views. Tea rooms and hotels sprung up to cater to them, and the hills also played a role in the local iron industry, with iron ore mined from the surrounding areas. In the early 20th century, the National Trust acquired the hills, continuing their legacy as a cherished natural space.

Today, the Clent Hills remain a magnet for outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors can explore numerous walking and hiking trails that range from gentle strolls to more challenging routes. They offer stunning panoramic views across Worcestershire and the wider West Midlands, often allowing glimpses of distant landmarks like the Malvern Hills, the Clee Hills, The Wrekin, and even the Birmingham city centre skyline. The hills are easily accessible, with free parking often available, such as on Clatterbach Lane, making them a popular choice for a day out in nature. Wildlife abounds here too, including deer, foxes, badgers, and numerous species of birds.

A notable landmark within the hills is the Four Stones, a folly on Walton Hill consisting of four standing stones thought to be around 4,000 years old. My footage includes a slider timelapse of these intriguing stones, capturing their ancient presence against the dynamic sky.

I've captured epic sunrises, majestic clouds, and striking cloud inversions where fog fills the valleys below while the peaks remain clear above. Sometimes it was very foggy, creating atmospheric, misty forests. The variety of camera work is extensive, showcasing dizzying gimbal work, smooth gimbal work, and all kinds of gimbal movements, providing a fantastic range of shots. This archive includes footage from probably 10 different drones, 5 different gimbals, and 20 different cameras, all delivering high-quality 4K UHD.
