Sometimes, looking back through my archive feels like flipping through a different lifetime. Snowdon and Crib Goch: Iconic Welsh Giants
Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) stands proudly as the highest mountain in Wales, a majestic peak at 1,085 metres (3,560 ft) above sea level, commanding the heart of Snowdonia National Park. It's a magnet for hikers and climbers, its rugged beauty and challenging ascents drawing countless adventurers. Crib Goch, on the other hand, is its more notorious neighbour – a formidable, knife-edge ridge on the Snowdon massif, widely considered one of the most challenging and celebrated scrambles in the UK. These mountains are, and always have been, truly special.
The Early Days: Sweat, Toil, and a Precariously Strapped Drone
Capturing this footage in early 2016 was a very different experience from today. Back then, I had considerably less fat and less hair on the bottom of my face, and definitely more on the top of my head! The journey up into the Snowdonia mountains involved multiple days of hiking, carrying a big, old drone precariously strapped to the outside of my backpack. I remember the weight of the big, heavy batteries and the equally heavy camera. The drone itself didn't always like to fly; every single flight was a huge risk. How times have changed!
The technology, while "high-tech" for 2016, was still in its infancy compared to what I use now. Drones were less stable, less automated, and far more demanding to operate in challenging mountain conditions. Each successful shot felt like a small victory against the elements and the technology itself. Yet, despite the struggles, the footage is brilliant. It’s sold as archive footage, representing bargain value and a true "sign of the times" for drone cinematography. I believe it’s perfect for social media, news, and definitely for TV and film in the right context. It is still brilliant footage.
A Piece of History: Snowdon Summit, Empty!
One of the most compelling aspects of Clip Pack #221 is seeing Snowdon summit in its pristine, almost untouched state. The footage shows the summit cafe at dawn light, magnificent, and the summit of Snowdon, empty! This was 2016, before the widespread glorification of mountain adventures on social media truly took hold. There are no crowds, just the raw, unchanging beauty of the mountain, yet somehow different.
