An Unforgettable Ascent: My Winter Sunrise on Snowdon's Summit in 4K UHD

There are some moments in my career as a cameraman that transcend the technical challenge and become truly unforgettable experiences. The winter sunrise trip to Snowdon's summit in January 2017, captured in my latest release Clip Pack #215 – Snowdon Winter Sunrise Stock Footage, is one such occasion. This footage isn't just about mountains; it's about pushing limits, a gamble on conditions, and ultimately, witnessing moments of sheer, unrepeatable epicness.

I remember that trip so clearly. My friend and colleague and I started our hike at "zero dark thirty," setting out into the pre-dawn cold with the ambitious goal of reaching Snowdon's summit by sunrise. We were carrying a ridiculous amount of drone gear that, for 2017, was considered top of the range. It was big, it was heavy, it was cumbersome, and frankly, those drones flew like a sack of Snowdonia rocks. But it was cutting edge for its time, and we were determined.

The climb itself was icy and dangerous, a relentless ascent filled with sweat and, I'm sure, a few muttered words. But we pushed on, driven by the promise of dawn breaking over Wales's highest peak. And we made it. We reached the summit just in time for moments of absolute epicness that are rarely, if ever, repeated.

The conditions that morning were simply magical. A fresh layer of snow blanketed the summits, and Crib Goch, the notorious knife-edge ridge, looked absolutely amazing. As the sun began to rise, the national park was bathed in a spectacular display of red and gold light. Crucially, there was no wind – a rare gift on a mountain summit – making the entire scene truly magical. We spent hours flying and filming, soaking in the quiet grandeur of the scene.

Looking back, the amount of effort was immense: hours of dangerous hiking up and down, countless hours of flying with those dodgy drones, and then the many, many hours of editing afterwards. It’s why I offer this footage as such a bargain, at just £1495. Some of the shots are nothing short of incredible; the conditions simply aligned in a way that will probably never be repeated. Even after spending over 200 days filming in Snowdonia National Park since then, this remains some of the best content I've captured. Those views are truly incredible. If you have a moment, take a look at the 5:00 mark in the clip pack previews; it gives you a real sense of what I mean.

You'll see wide views, dramatic reveals, and tilting shots of Snowdon summit, with Crib Goch's knife-edge ridge covered in snow. The summit itself looks magnificent in the morning light, as do the wider areas and surrounding lakes. The summit was gloriously empty that morning, a stark contrast to how it often appears today. The mountain summit cafe, the rocks, the boulders, the snow, and the ice – it's all there, simply brilliant. I even managed to get some gimbal footage from the top, including a memorable shot of a police helicopter just a few feet above the summit.

This footage is an essential piece for any production requiring authentic, stunning winter mountain scenes. All clips are in 4K UHD with no extra fees for TV and film use. Full terms apply.

My Snowdonia Stock Footage Collection: A Love Affair with the Welsh Mountains

My journey through Snowdonia National Park has been an enduring love affair, a persistent quest to capture every nuance of its dramatic beauty. From the highest peaks to the most secluded valleys, the ancient geology and ever-changing weather of this incredible place hold a unique power. My full Snowdonia stock footage collection is a testament to this devotion, a comprehensive visual library born from countless hours of hiking, climbing, and pushing the boundaries of cinematography.

I’ve spent extensive time exploring the Glyderau mountains, traversing the rugged slopes of Glyder Fach and Glyder Fawr, feeling the ancient rock beneath my boots. I’ve captured the distinctive profile of Y Garn, with its sweeping views down to the Ogwen Valley, and explored the dramatic, dark chasm of the Devil's Kitchen (Twll Du). The majestic Tryfan, with its iconic Adam and Eve stones standing defiantly on the summit, has been a frequent subject, its challenging scrambles and breathtaking vistas forever etched in my memory.

My lens has also delved deep into the wild expanse of the Carneddau range. I've climbed the towering heights of Pen yr Ole Wen, Carnedd Dafydd, and Carnedd Llewelyn, Wales's second-highest summit, capturing the vast, rolling plateaus and the stark beauty of their rocky terrain. From these summits, the views often stretch across to the distant Glyderau and, of course, the grand Snowdon Massif itself.

The numerous lakes within Snowdonia have been a constant source of inspiration. I've filmed the serene waters of Llyn Ogwen, often reflecting the dramatic peaks above, and the pristine clarity of Llyn Idwal, a geological marvel surrounded by its unique "beach" and rugged cliffs. Further afield, I've sought out the more secluded beauty of Ffynnon Lloer, a truly pretty mountain lake hidden in the Carneddau, and the remote wildness of Llyn Bochlwyd. In the untamed Rhinogydd range, I've navigated to the rugged shores of Llyn Hywel and the almost primeval Llyn Du, capturing their raw, isolated reflections.

I’ve documented the changing faces of valleys like the Ogwen Valley, from its misty dawns where low clouds create ethereal inversions, to bright days when military aircraft skim its floor. My footage captures the intimacy of the mountain environment: the intricate textures of moss on ancient rocks, the delicate bloom of wildflowers, the resilience of windswept heather, and the surprising presence of sheep and wild ponies grazing on impossibly steep slopes.

You'll find countless scenes depicting the very act of adventure: hands gripping cold rock on challenging scrambles, the determined rhythm of footsteps on rocky trails, the setting up of tents in driving rain or deep snow, and the simple joy of cooking a hearty meal – be it chicken and mushroom pot noodles, sizzling bacon for a morning bap, or steak and liver by the tent as dusk falls. I’ve captured the essence of surviving cold nights on snow-covered summits, the breath fogging in the air, and the sheer effort of carrying heavy packs over challenging terrain.

My collection spans the spectrum of conditions: from the glorious golden light of sunrise and sunset painting the peaks in fiery hues, to the brooding intensity of cloudy, murky days, thick fog, and relentless rain. I've captured the serene stillness of frozen lakes and the dynamic rush of mountain streams and waterfalls. The evolution of the landscape through the seasons is a constant theme, from the first snows of winter to the vibrant greens of summer.

Whether you need a sweeping aerial panorama from a drone, the immersive stability of gimbal shots, the time-compressed drama of timelapses capturing cloud inversions or light trails of distant towns, or the authentic detail of tripod and POV footage of hiking and wild camping, my collection provides an unparalleled resource. It’s all available in crystal-clear 4K UHD, with no extra fees for broadcast television and film use, and with all footage featuring me fully model released.

This comprehensive library is a testament to my love for Snowdonia, and my commitment to delivering exceptional visuals. Explore the depth and breadth of my Snowdonia stock footage on ChrisHomer.uk – I truly believe you'll find the best available anywhere.
