Day 1 & 2: A Change of Scenery and 'Proper English Weather'
My week began with the main event at Goodwood, but my passion always lies in capturing the entire story. After the horse racing, I took my drone down to the Chichester Harbour area, ready to fly. I often head out with a gimbal on my trusty old electric bike, or a drone, or my time-lapse camera to shoot whatever takes my fancy. The second day, however, brought proper English weather. It was grey, gloomy, cloudy, and surprisingly cool for the end of July, so I had to put on my coat! The conditions were actually perfect for capturing a different side of the British seaside. There were thousands of boats moored up, but hardly anyone around, creating an eerie calm. From above, with the ND filter in place, the drone captured some great abstract shots of the patterns and symmetry of the moored boats, and the moody, gloomy skies provided a beautifully artistic feel to the scenery. Day 3: The Canal, the Coast, and a Red-Glowing Beard
My journey continued as I followed the Chichester Canal, heading towards the coast. The weather had turned brighter, with blue skies and scattered clouds. On Google Maps, I’d spotted some interesting areas with woodland and what I thought were islands of trees further out. I flew the drone down to the coast, catching some windsurfers in the process, and discovered that my "islands of trees" were actually seaweed and reed beds, which looked fantastic from the air. As the sun began to set, the light became spectacular, glowing orange and red on the horizon. I’ve always said my beard is my good light detector, and that evening, it was glowing red! I captured some amazing photos and video of the coast, with a unique sense of sublime beauty. It's not a sandy beach kind of place, but the winding stream running down past the woodland and out towards the coast made for some fantastic shots. Day 4 & 5: The City and Unearthing a 'Disgustingly Beautiful' Truth
Later in the week, heavy rain and thunderstorms forced me to find cover in the city, so I turned my focus to the magnificent Chichester Cathedral. The wet ground and grey skies made for some moody and atmospheric shots, and it was a good opportunity to do some photography for fun. The footage from this day, showing the cathedral and city streets from above, forms Clip Pack #292 - Chichester City Centre Drone Stock Footage, offering a comprehensive aerial view of Chichester's historic heart. It was on day five, however, that the most compelling story of the week emerged. Taking the drone up for a wide shot of the city, I spotted a huge open area on the edge of town filled with green, blue, and brown pools of what looked like horrible, dirty water. Having read the news, I was aware that Southern Water has a record for dumping sewage, and I suspected this was related to the recent heavy rainfall. I scrambled through a huge nature reserve on a baking hot, humid day to get closer, and the smell was undeniably foul and disgusting. The drone footage, however, captured a raw, cinematic beauty in the vast scale of the site and the shocking colours of the polluted water, a visual contrast I can only describe as "disgustingly beautiful."
